Our Agency Work
Buchanan Law now undertakes or co-ordinates a significant amount of agency work with or for other law firms, trade mark attorneys or patent attorneys from both within Australia and internationally.
Because we are based in Canberra, the Federal capital of the Commonwealth of Australia, we are, of course, strategically placed for swift, direct access to Federal Government Departments and agencies, including:
- IP Australia (including, most significantly for us, the Trade Marks Office - see below)
- Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC)
- Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA)
But even where direct access is not an issue, a significant number of firms still choose to instruct BL as their preferred agents: our strong and continuing focus on intellectual property, technology (including biotechnology and IT) and telecommunications practice means that we can provide precisely that expertise needed to progress matters which are:
- outside our principals’ mainstream practice areas; or
- made more complex because of differences of law between countries or territories; or
- require specific Australian representation.
Within the areas listed, we have seen significant levels of demand for our trade mark agency services: with two dual-qualified trade mark attorneys/solicitors, a former trade mark examiner and an overseas legal associate who is the co-author of a leading UK textbook on trade marks already on our trade marks staff, our instructing principals know that we can provide both the coverage and the co-ordination of trade mark work that they require.
