Buchanan Law
Who are we?
Buchanan Law is a legal practice with a difference: we see our job in the broader context of protecting and leveraging your know-how.
What do we do?
In general terms, Buchanan Law is a commercial law firm and undertakes a variety of general commercial work such as contract drafting and analysis. We also regularly undertake related corporate, partnership and commercial trust work.
However, following the pattern set by our founder, Scott Buchanan, we have developed connections with a number of industry sectors and corresponding expertise in certain areas of law and, as such, we are now regularly contacted as specialists in Intellectual Property, Technology and Telecommunications matters.
So, today, although we provide a broad range of commercial and corporate legal services:
- Our focus is on the commercial aspects of Intellectual Property, Technology and Telecommunications law.
- We are leaders within our chosen practice areas, providing specialist, commercially-oriented legal advice and creative solutions.
- Our boutique size allows us to provide responsive and accessible service to our many innovation-driven clients.
Why are we in Canberra?
Buchanan Law is strategically based in Canberra, the home of the Commonwealth government. Because Australia’s Intellectual Property and Telecommunications laws are based on Commonwealth legislation, we have the resources, the access and the expertise to service the requirements of our national and international client base.
Our presence in Canberra gives us both significant operational costs advantages over our national competitors and access to important national decision makers. We regularly visit our interstate clients with access to shared offices arrangements in every Australian capital city.
On a personal level, although we acknowledge Canberra has many critics, we have all found that the lifestyle and environment in ‘The Bush Capital’ allows us to maintain perspective and wellbeing in a way that allows for creative and dedicated legal thinking. For us, the old canard ”I have two children - one living and one in Canberra” is simply not true.
How did we get here?
In 2004, Scott Buchanan took the momentous decision to set up a practice of his own. He had a vision of a different kind of law firm, small in scale but able to deliver excellent yet affordable work to commercial clients. Scott’s love of Intellectual Property law (not far in terms of affection behind his family and pets) also prompted him to consider various specialisations in addition to general commercial work.
